Everything in the box, pulled apart

Nine oak components, eight bolts, one key. Nothing is glued, so any part can be swapped by the person who owns the chair, not the person who made it. Numbers on the drawing match the parts list and the printed sheet in the box.

Bolts pull into brass-lined barrel nuts sunk into the legs, so the joint tightens against metal, not end grain. Re-tighten once after the first month; after that, once a year.

Dimensions in millimetres

Seat height 450 mm suits tables from 720 to 760 mm. The back leans 7 degrees, the seat is dished 4 mm at its centre, and the whole chair weighs less than a full watering can.

03 · Timber and finish

Three timbers, four finishes

Choose here and the price follows you to the buy module. Every option is oiled or soaped by hand in the workshop; nothing is lacquered, so scratches sand out and the surface can be renewed at home.

Timber All from certified forests within 600 km of the workshop

Finish Hand applied, two coats

European oak, natural oilDrawings on this page update as you choose. Colour on screen is a guide; sample blocks are 40 kr, refunded with the chair.

Oak is the reason this chair can be bolted rather than glued. It holds a barrel nut without crushing, it takes a 4 mm dish in the seat without cupping, and a 22 mm board steam-bends to the 180 mm radius of the backrest without a single failure in the last four hundred we have made.

The smoked oak is the same timber, kiln-fumed with ammonia for eleven days so the colour goes right through the board rather than sitting on the surface. Ash is lighter in weight and colour and takes the soap finish best.

04 · Assembly

Six steps, twelve minutes, one key

The order matters: rails first, seat last. Do every bolt finger tight, then go round once with the key. The printed sheet in the box shows the same six drawings at the same scale.

11 min

Unpack and lay out

Lay the seat face down on the box lid so the top never touches the floor. Sort the eight bolts and eight barrel nuts. Find the key; it is taped inside the lid.

23 min

Side rails to rear legs

Drop a barrel nut into each rear leg, slot facing out. Offer up a side rail and drive two bolts through it into the nut. Finger tight only. Repeat for the other side.

32 min

Front legs

Same again at the front: nut into the leg, two bolts through the rail. The chamfer on the foot faces outward. You now have two complete sides.

42 min

Stretchers between the sides

Stand both sides up and push the front and rear stretchers into their housings. They are a firm fit and need no bolts. The frame now stands on its own.

52 min

Seat

Lower the frame onto the upturned seat. Four bolts go up through the corner blocks in the rails into nuts already set in the seat. Dish faces up when you turn it over.

62 min

Backrest, then tighten

Slide the backrest into its housings from the front. Two bolts from behind. Stand the chair up, press the felt glides on, then go round all eight bolts once with the key.

Nothing to glue, no second person needed. Timed on 40 first-time assemblers: fastest 8 minutes, slowest 19, median 12.

Taking it apart is the same list in reverse and takes about five minutes.

05 · Why it ships flat

A chair that travels as a board

An assembled chair is mostly air. Ours leaves Malmö in a box one fifth of the volume, so the freight is a fraction of the cost and the carbon, and the box is stiff enough to come back to us if anything is wrong.
